Orlistat has been shown to affect the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (vitamin A, D, E and K). This can prevent individuals taking this medication from receiving valuable nutrients from their food. Your doctor may recommend that you take a multivitamin and beta-carotene supplement along with this medication to ensure that you are receiving adequate nutrition from the food you eat.
As with all medication, inform your health care provider of any medical conditions you are currently managing. Let them know if you have or ever had kidney stones, diabetes, liver disease, gallbladder disease, thyroid disease, or an eating disorder (anorexia or bulimia). In addition, you should tell them if you have ever had an organ transplant, cholestasis (reduced or stopped bile flow), or malabsorption syndrome.
Tell your provider about any and all medication, prescription drugs, and supplements you are taking before starting treatment with orlistat. Orlistat is used to help the stomach and the small intestine digest fats. Orlistat is taken by mouth (one capsule or two small capsules) or by injection (a gel capsule or a small capsule). Orlistat is a prescription medicine and must be taken as prescribed by a doctor. Orlistat is to be taken on an empty stomach.
This medicine contains a medicine called orlistat. Orlistat belongs to a group of medicines called lipase inhibitors. It works by preventing the absorption of fat in the intestine. This may help to decrease the amount of fat absorbed by the body.
Orlistat should be taken as advised by your doctor. The first dose should be taken as soon as possible after eating, unless it is earlier. Orlistat can take up to two weeks before you want to try it. If you do not take it as directed, you will need to use this medicine for a maximum of 3 months to prevent unwanted side effects. You may also need to stop using it after 12 weeks.
Do not take it more often than prescribed. If you do not understand the instructions, ask your doctor or pharmacist for help. Take Orlistat exactly as directed. Do not take extra or repeat this dose.
Orlistat may be taken with or without food.
Your doctor will decide how often you should take Orlistat. Usually, it is taken once daily for 3 days. The first day is called the morning. Orlistat is only to be taken once a day. If you miss a dose of Orlistat you should take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your normal schedule. Do not double the dose.
Orlistat is not recommended to be used in children.
If you miss a dose of Orlistat, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, go back to your normal schedule.
